toujours bien

I am a great fan of sue Grafton but her latest novel is not up to the previous ones. A bit on the dull side.

I have enjoyed most of Grafton's "alphabet" mysteries and it saddens me that she has died. However, I do find some sort of perverse justice in knowing she left "Z" undone completely, no notes, no "first draft," nothing so someone else can't come along and publish it as her unfinished final book. Like any good mystery, it's good to be left hanging, you sly fox. I'm going to miss Millhone, but I already knew that considering the alphabet was running out of letters anyway. It is interesting to see how Millhone matured, sort of, over the many years she lived. I'm making up a story ending for Millhone along the lines of "she lived happily ever after, along with her charming landlord but continued to have love issues." Thank you Sue Grafton for giving us so many years of your life, for letting us escape into a world most of us don't live anything like. We thoroughly enjoyed the ride and hope you are at peace. You made so many people happy.

After reading several negative reviews about how the book had too many subplots, I was a bit wary. Having just finished X, however, I would say that it is true to the mind of Kinsey Millhone, from whose point of view it is written. The attention to detail, whether relevant or not, just exemplifies the way my favorite PI talks to herself. We readers don't need to know what color the chair on the front porch of the suspect's house is, but Kinsey notices everything (as she should in her profession). The various subplots merely put me "inside" her life to understand what is going on in between advancements in the main plot. I enjoyed the book a lot and look forward to the next one.

I have just finished the book X and I am mystified at a couple poor reviews. I actually think this was one of her better books. Ms. Grafton takes you through three seemingly random yarns that she weaves together to bring you into a couple weeks in the life of Kinsey Millhone, hard boiled PI with a somewhat soft center for her landlord, cats, babies (in tiny increments) , handsome men and her penchant for doing the right thing. I can see the way Ms. Grafton has evolved in her writing. She does more than just telling a simple story as in her first couple books in the series. Her way with descriptions of scenery, haute couture, art, furnishings, lead the reader into seeing through Kinsey's eyes. As far as I am concerned, this type of novel, escapist though it may be, is such a treat. I both admire the writer and am envious all at the same time. I know that when I pick up one of these books I am in for entertaining reading with a carefully crafted plot. Grab the book, pour yourself a drink and expect to be entertained. I certainly was.

Private Investigator Kinsey Millhone keeps a set of blank index cards handy to make notes about people and places pertinent to the case. Readers of X may want to do something similar because there is a cast of thousands. As a longtime Sue Grafton reader, I enjoyed X very much. I think I read my first Kinsey Millhone book around 1989. X is long at over 400 pages (her earliest mysteries were about 250 pages in hardcover), and shows evidence of padding, such as step-by-step descriptions of Kinsey making coffee or making a sandwich. But I enjoyed catching up with Kinsey and the gang -- her landlord Henry, local pub owners Rosie and William, and occasional romantic interests Cheney and Dietz. There are two full fledged mysteries in X and Kinsey is racing time to solve both. Meanwhile, there's a minor subplot going on with the strange couple that has moved in next to Kinsey and Henry.Since Grafton left time behind and has kept her novels in the 1980s (and sometimes the 1960s), I have enjoyed playing Spot the Anachronism while reading her books. But she has defeated me in X. I could not find a single slip up. Power windows in her 1983 Honda? Yes, in some models. Smoking in bars in California in 1989? Yes, the no-smoking law didn't go into effect until 1994. Pan Am from LAX to Heathrow in 1989? Yes, Pan Am was in business until 1991.While I might not recommend this one to a first time Sue Grafton reader, it's a lot of fun for those of us who've been along for the ride since the actual 1980s.(Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Books for a digital review copy.)

Probably the worst Grafton book. Seemed like she just threw in everything. Most disappointed and were many friends. Definitely not up to the standards of her other books. Maybe by the end of the alphabet you run out of ideas to keep your readers totally engrossed as they were with the others.
